On March 11, 2011, Japan experienced an unprecedented earthquake off the Pacific coast of Tohoku, and suffered the direct and long-term effects of the earthquake and tsunami in the area. In Fukushima prefecture, agricultural land contaminated with radioactive Cesium from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. Therefore, surface soil were removed for deconamination, and low fertility sandy soil was covered. Organic matter input is necessary to increase soil organic matter and green manure application is an effective method to improve soil fertility in the paddy field. Soil microbes and enzyme activities are sensitively responded to organic matter addition, but their dynamics on the dressed field are not well investigated. In this study, we focused on changing the microbial community, diversity and enzyme activities along with the green manure decomposition process in the sandy soil dressed paddy field in Japan. The green manure of hairy vetch and oat were harvested and incorporated in May 2020 and their decomposition process as cellulose and hemicellulose contents were determined. Soil bacterial communities were analyzed using 16S amplicon sequencing. The green manure was rapidly decomposed within the first 13 days, and they did not remain 50 days after green manure incorporation. Soil microbial biomass carbon was higher in the M treatment after GM treatment, but was not significant between treatments after 50 days. Dehydrogenase and β-glucosidase activities changed during the harvesting period, but did not correlate with GM decomposition. Microbial diversity (OTU numbers and Shannon index) also changed with GM application, but they were not associated with GM decomposition. Soil prokaryotic communities and some bacteria (Baciili and Chlorolfexi) are significantly influenced by GM treatment. However, Clostrida was not affected by GM. Mixed green manure treatment showed significantly rapid hemicellulose decomposition than other treatments. In this process, Anaerolineae were negatively correlated with the decreasing of hemicellulose in this treatment. These results showed that GM treatment affected microbial communities, and their response was active during the decomposition process.

Aims: Special fertilizer and soil mulching have been used to improve crop yield worldwide. However, the effects of special fertilizer with mulching on soil characteristics of citrus orchards were not yet fully understood. This study aimed at assessing the effects of different mulch patterns including plastic mulching and grass mulching on improving fruit quality of Ponkan and providing a new insight of mulching development in citrus orchards.Methods: In this study, a two-year field experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of citrus special fertilizer (FR), grass mulching (RGM), and plastic mulching (RPM) on fruit quality, soil organic carbon fractions, physicochemical properties, and plant nutrition in Ponkan citrus orchard.Results: The study resulted showed that special fertilizer treatment and grass mulching treatment increased Total soluble solid contents by 6.76% and 3.97%, while plastic mulching decreased Titratable acid contents by 19.44%, resulting in increases of fruit TSS: TA by 6.14%, 3.61%, and 22.76%, respectively. Correlation analyses showed that citrus fruit quality was associated with soil bulk density, Total porosity, Capillary porosit, Aeration porosity, Total organic carbon, Readily oxidized organic carbon, Microbial biomass carbon and Soil available phosphorus. Soil physical properties were improved by RPM, but FR and RGM had better effects on soil nutrients and organic carbon, as evidenced by the results of principal component analysis and loading matrix plot. Conclusions: This study suggested that the different effects of special fertilizer, plastic mulching, and grass mulching on improving fruit quality were associated with their diverse effects on improving soil characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Mixed cropping of hairy vetch and Barley is widely used as a green manure for reducing chemical fertilizers while maintaining soil fertility in paddy soil. We investigated the effect of Molybdenum (Mo) fertilizer on vetch N 2 fixation, biomass production and transfer N from vetch to barley under a hairy vetch-barley mixed cropping system. METHODS AND RESULTS: The barley and hairy vetch were sowed at a rate of 135 and 23 kg/ha, respectively, without chemical fertilizer application but with Mo fertilizer at 0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0 kg/ha as a treatment. The percentage of hairy vetch N derived from air N 2 fixation (%Ndfa) and N transfer from hairy vetch to barley (%Ndfv) was determined by the 15 N natural abundance method. Although application of Mo at 2.0 kg/ha significantly increased biomass of both barley and hairy vetch, the biomass was decreased at application of Mo 4.0 kg/ha. At the application of Mo 2.0 kg/ha, the percentage of Ndfa and Ndfv was 81.7 and 53.9, respectively, which are significantly higher than that of the treatments without Mo. CONCLUSION: These results highlight that application of Mo fertilizer can be an effective measures to improve N fixation in hairy vetch and biomass production in both barley and hairy vetch.
