Improvement of the railway track efficiency by minimizing the rail wear in curves

Abstract: The article presents the analysis results for the parameters measurements of the rail track and the ratio between values of the vertical and side wears of rails in curves of different radii under different operating conditions. It is shown that the installed elevations of the outer rail do not meet the contemporary requirements in increasing the efficiency of the track while minimizing the rail wear. At the second stage of the research, various sections were examined by type of traction, technical equipment, p… Show more

“…It was noted in the works [8, 14,26] that during the movement of wagon in a train along the curved track sections, the forces of interaction between the wheels and rails are directly affected by the transverse forces that arise from the action of longitudinal forces in the auto-couplings of wagons in traction modes on long grades and during braking, especially the regenerative one. Moving along the curve, a wagon under the action of longitudinal forces in auto-couplings may take different positions relative to the track axis, which greatly affects the values of lateral horizontal forces of interaction and the force of friction of wheels and the rails.…”

“…The study [4] analyses the accumulation of deviations in the geometric parameters of a tramway track as a function of the axial load, with a hard surface, which is also applicable to railway tracks when the vertical and horizontal irregularities of the track increase with the tonnage transported. The article [5] analyses the vertical and lateral rail wear and the influence of the outer rail height, the type of traction and the longitudinal profile of the track. In order to automate railway straightening systems in the horizontal and vertical planes [6], a mathematical model has been created that allows the rational determination of curve parameters during the operation of railway machines.…”

“…In relation to the above-mentioned technologies and technical solutions, we can mention some special ones such as application of noise and vibration damping layers and elements [2][3][4][5][6]; ensuring lower stress in the railway permanent ways' that result and ensure lower elastic and plastic deformation in the track as well as in the layer structure [7][8]; techniques which provide special work processes, e.g. tamping of wide sleepers or side tamping that does not disturb the dense, compacted sub-ballast layer [9][10]; new and newer technologies ensuring decreased dynamic effects that can result in subsidiary failures (maybe cracking, fracturing, breaking) in the tracks' elements [11]; minimizing the wear of track elements (mainly the rails') [12] and lowering the ballast breakage [13][14][15][16]. The determination of the geometrical deterioration process is also quite important [17][18] for the ability to predict maintenance work.…”
