Improvement of the nutritional quality of Egyptian and Sudanese sorghum grains by the addition of phosphates

Abstract: 1. Male broilers (0 to 35 d) were given foods with two types of yellow sorghum substituted for maize in isonutrient diets. Sorghum-based foods were also supplemented with extra phosphorus, to provide a total P of about 8 g/kg; the P being from either orthophosphoric acid or food grade dicalcium phosphate. 2. Both sorghums depressed growth and food:gain ratio and increased the incidence of locomotor disorder to about 0.50 (maize control = 0). Sorghum from Sudan, with higher concentrations of both tannin and phy… Show more

“…On the other hand supplementation of oak tannin decreased the feed intake. This result is consistent with findings of Ibrahim et al (1988), Nyachoti et al (1997), Trevino et al (1992), Vilarino et al (2009), Mahmood et al (2008.…”

“…As can be seen from Table2 quails fed with diets including oak tannin had considerably low FiBW. These results are in agreement with findings of Ibrahim et al, 1988;Nyachoti et al, 1997;Trevino et al, 1992;Vilarino et al, 2009;Mahmood et al, 2008. As can be seen from Table 2, BWG, FI ranged from 99.48 to 168.90 and 516.75 to 680.08 g with the highest BWG and FI for quails fed with control diet. BWG and FI decreased with increasing dose of oak supplementation whereas FCR increased with increased oak supplementation.…”

“…However, they obtained better results by adding phosphoric acid. Based on this, Ibrahim et al (1988) compared the addition of phosphoric acid with that of dicalcium phosphate to diets containing the same varieties of sorghum. Both treatments almost completely eliminated the leg abnormalities found in -50% chicks fed on sorghum.…”

“…A utilização de sorgo com alto teor em tanino na dieta de frangos de corte é desvantajosa por diminuir o ganho de peso e piorar a conversão alimentar, além de reduzir o consumo, quando comparado ao milho e ao sorgo de baixo teor de tanino (ROSTAGNO et al, 1973;OLIVETTI;RAPACCINI, 1987;IBRAIHM et al 1988).…”
