Shipping is facing huge pressure problems in this 21st century such as climate change and environmental pollution and the depletion of energy resources. Seaports are an important component of the shipping industry architecture. Although there is no common solution, seaports around the globe face the same challenge. Challenges raised include difficulties in integrating new technology into automation, traffic congestion, harmonizing residential communities around the port, quantifying and reducing CO2 emissions as well as planning for the energy transition. In addition, improving the adaptability of the port infrastructure in the context of increased pressure from market demand, labor shortage, and escalating prices should be considered. In that context, a smart port was born as a necessity. However, the understanding of smart ports is very limited. This review examines the recently published smart port literature to clarify the common concepts of smart ports and their development progress on the way to building a sustainable seaport ecosystem. Although smart port metrics and key port performance metrics are organized around four key performance areas including operations, environment, energy, and safety. However, a comprehensive review of all four key areas is very broad and difficult to cover in a review article. Therefore, this work focuses on analyzing and discussing the approaches and applications of the technology in smart port energy management systems. Our research has shown that different smart port founding perspectives play a decisive role in technology approaches to building a port energy management system including optimizing algorithms for energy consumption, balancing demand and energy production, and comprehensively integrating renewable energy. New findings in this study contribute to the elucidation of smart port concepts based on improving energy use and management efficiency with innovative technologies in the context of sustainable development of the shipping industry.

The study explored the legislative database for the maritime sector to be sustainable and have an intact blue economy. The problem for organizations with shipowners that have fishing boats older than 20 years is stated. Decision-making authorities face challenges nowadays. To be in the fleet for the next decade, shipowners for their ships should deploy energy efficiency projects for marine system retrofitting to improve energy efficiency and meet environmental regulations. The Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan’s development principles are discussed due to the current need for its deployment from 2021, so shipowners can contribute to the fast adoption of new regulations by the International Maritime Organization. In this work it is being offered to incorporate energy management issues with guidelines for upcoming regulations as well as those that are currently enforced. To improve energy efficiency, reduce environmental impact and cut fuel consumption costs, marine system retrofitting has been proposed. In this paper the focus is being put on studying energy management strengths and weaknesses which can lead to a qualitative understanding of the performance of the organizational structure, this work also focuses on the management settings concerning energy efficiency. If the organization wants to win by integrating energy policy, high-quality communication or promotion of energy efficiency issues should be employed. Marine plastic debris challenges fishing carriers on the African Union route. A possible beneficial solution for shipowners is discussed in this study.

Although direct measurements of the fuel injection pressure and the travel of the injector needle in conjunction with measurements of the valve train mechanism timing can provide complete diagnostic information about the technical conditions of the fuel injection and valve train systems, this requires the installation of sensors and other equipment directly into the systems, which is possible within research laboratories but is generally forbidden during operation of the ship. Malfunctions in the fuel injection and valve train systems can also be identified from the indicator diagrams of an engine operating cycle, expressed as P(V) and P(deg) diagrams. The basic parameters of the engine operating cycle, such as the maximum combustion pressure Pmax, compression pressure Pcompr, and indicated mean effective pressure IMEP, can also be used to indicate deviations from proper engine operation. Using a combination of a vibration sensor with an in-cylinder gas pressure sensor widens the capabilities of diagnostics for marine diesel engines under operational conditions. A vibration sensor with a magnetic base can help in determining the timings of the lifting and landing of the injector needle, fuel delivery by the fuel injection pump, opening and closing of the circulation of heated heavy fuel oil, and opening and closing of the gas distribution valves. This also offers a promising solution for diagnostics of the cylinder lubrication oil injectors. The proposed approach allows valuable information to be received during engine operation in accordance with the principle of non-destructive control, and can help in early detection of possible engine malfunctions.
