-It is obvious that power quality is an important characteristic of today's distribution power systems as loadsbecome more sensitive on the other hand nonlinear loads are increasing in the electrical distribution system. Considering the distributed nature of harmonic loads, the need for distributed power quality improvement (PQI) is inevitable. From years ago, researchers have been working on various kinds of filters and devices to enhance the overall power quality of power system, but today the nature of distribution system has been changed and power electronic based DGs play an important role in distribution grids. In this paper, a thorough survey is done on power quality enhancement devices with emphasis on ancillary services of multi-functional DGs. A literature review is also done on microgrids concept, testbeds and related control methods. Although there were some applications of DGs for PQI improvement these applications were not defined multi-functional DGs. Various control methods are studied and categorized regarding different viewpoints in the literature. Finally, a couple of thorough comparisons are done between the available techniques considering the nature, capabilities, advantages and implementation costs.

Summary This paper presents hybrid photovoltaic (PV)‐wind‐battery energy storage network tied to three‐phase utility grid side inverter using fuzzy logic proportional integral derivative‐improved second‐order generalized integrator‐quadrature signal generator‐phase locked loop (FLPID‐ISOGI‐PLL) for power quality enhancement at the consumer side terminals. An advanced ISOGI‐PLL control strategy is implemented to separate the fundamental constituent of each phase load current without sensing other phase currents, which makes phase independent and reliable. It has several characteristics, such as improved hybrid system (HS) power penetration, load sharing, and power factor correction. Additionally, FLPID adaptive voltage controller is incorporated in the presented scheme to enhance dynamic operation of the system and also keeping the power balance between the dc and ac sides by maintaining the dc bus voltage. Moreover, the photovoltaic system's feed‐forward constituent is incorporated in the proposed technique, which improves the system dynamic performance and minimizes oscillations in grid currents. The outcomes of the advanced control strategy are found adequate for enhancing active power filter (APF) performance at the consumer side terminals under several operating conditions. The proposed control technique is computationally analyzed by simulating the system through MATLAB/SIMULINK under steady state, dynamic, load removed, and unbalanced grid voltage conditions. The competency of an advanced control approach is examined with hardware‐in‐loop (HIL) co‐simulation using FPGA Virtex‐7 VC‐707 via very high speed integrated circuit hardware description language (VHDL) code generation. Finally, the simulation outcomes are verified through a real‐time prototype laboratory platform using FPGA Virtex‐7 VC‐707 evaluation kit, and the total harmonic distortion (THD) analysis of injected grid currents is tabulated under different operating scenarios and found good within the IEEE‐519 standard limits.

Summary The increasing need to improve power quality with the reduction of the harmonic content of current and voltage waveforms has been intensively analyzed in several studies, thus motivating the proposal of many high power factor rectifiers based on the classic converters such as boost and buck‐boost. Moreover, distinct control techniques have also been proposed due to the commercial availability of integrated circuits (ICs) dedicated to impose sinusoidal input currents in switch‐mode power supplies (SMPSs). The boost converter operating in continuous conduction mode (CCM) is by far the most traditional choice for this purpose due to circuit simplicity and low electromagnetic interference (EMI) levels. Within this context, this work analyzes some of the most important control techniques used in power factor correction (PFC). The performance of a single‐phase boost converter using peak current mode control (PCMC), average current mode control (ACMC), and one cycle control (OCC) is evaluated experimentally in detail. A comprehensive analysis of key aspects such as the input current waveform and respective harmonic content, dc output voltage, and dynamic response of the converter is also presented.
