Improvement of mechanical properties and heat distortion temperature of polylactic acid by highly aromatic hyperbranched polyamide

Abstract: The highly aromatic hyperbranched polyamide (HBPA) was synthesized and used as a modifier in order to enhance the physical performance of polylactic acid (PLA). The results showed that compared to the neat PLA, the tensile strength of the PLA/HBPA blends increased by 41.8%; fracture energy increased by 42.8% when the content of HBPA was 1.0 phr. The addition of HBPA can significantly improve the thermal deformation temperature of PLA. The polarized optical microscope images suggested that HBPA can act as a nuc… Show more

“…This might be due to enhancement of the force by the addition of filler content, between the rHDPE molecular chains, and hindering their movement, hence resulted in improved resistance to bending deformation, so that hardening the matrix. The similar findings were reported by Kim and Cho 48 and Sun et al 49 with kenaf fibre/polypropylene composites and polylactic acid/aromatic hyperbranched polyamide.…”

“…Additionally, Table 3 summarizes the specific test parameters that are commonly used to evaluate thermal characteristics. The parameters include T d,5 , T d,10 , T max , and Y 650°C , representing the temperatures at 5% and 10% weight loss, the maximum decomposition rate, and the char yield at 650°C, respectively 42 . As depicted in Figure 8, each TGA curve exhibits a distinct weight loss phase, while Figure 9 displays a single peak on each DTG curve.…”

This indicates that all samples underwent decomposition through a one-step process.…”

“…As a result, compared to that of pure PLA, the IS of PLA/PPSQ composite containing 2 wt.% PPSQ increased by 80% [14]. Moreover, PLA was crosslinked by highly aromatic hyperbranched polyamide (HBPA) resulting in its heat deformation temperature (HDT) enhancing from 58.6°C (pure PLA) to 61.2°C [15]. Among the aforementioned four modi cation methods, physical lling as a simple and effective method, is widely used in PLA modi cation.…”
