Improvement of insulin secretion and pancreatic β-cell function in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats treated with Aloe vera extract

Abstract: Background:Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by chronic hyperglycemia. Plant extracts and their products are being used as an alternative system of medicine for the treatment of diabetes. Aloe vera has been traditionally used to treat several diseases and it exhibits antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing effects. Streptozotocin (STZ)-induced Wistar diabetic rats were used in this study to understand the potential protective effect of A. vera extract on the pancreatic islets.Ob… Show more

“…According to the results, administration of 500 mg/kg CPP in hyperglycemic rats showed healthy architecture of islets of Langerhans with active β cells and absence of any necrotic change. These results are in agreement with a study in which treatment of diabetic rats with Aloe vera extracts resulted in significant increase in the number of islets of Langerhans and improvement in insulin secretion [65]. 7 Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity important roles in the pathological process of diabetes.…”

“…Then, the mean islet number per field and mean islet size were calculated for each group of animals. The number of islets was expressed as N/10 mm 2 of the pancreatic parenchyma, according to Noor et al [24]. For the islet size, the maximum diameter of the islet was selected by comparing all possible radii diameters per islet and choosing the greatest according to previous work [4].…”

“…Currently, the only option for achieving normal glucose levels in diabetic patients is the stimulation of insulin secretion by medicinal plants or renewal of β cells. 20,21 Increased free radical generation and oxidative stress together with hyperglycemia play a key role in the pathogenesis of diabetes and its late complications. 22 β Cells are highly sensitive to destruction by oxidative stress because of their low level of free radical-scavenging enzymes, which protect the cell from the damaging effects of oxidative stress.…”
