Improvement of Germination and Early Growth of Radish (Raphanus sativus L.) through Modulation of Seed Metabolic Processes

Abstract: Radish (Raphanus sativus L.) is a vegetable cultivated worldwide because of its large succulent hypocotyls. The priming method initiates metabolic processes at early stages and regulates the metabolic events in seed necessary for germination. This research was conducted to examine the influence of various priming treatments on physiological performance (germination, growth, lipid peroxidation, primary and secondary metabolism) and antioxidant activity of radish seedlings. On the basis of germination and growth… Show more

“…The radicle length of at least 2 mm was considered as the germination phase. The germination rate was calculated using the following formula ( Kanjevac et al, 2022 ): G 1 , G 2 , and G n are the number of germinated seeds calculated at the first, second and last counts; N 1 , N 2 , and N n are the number of days after sowing to the first, second, and last counts.…”

“…Priming with IAA improved antioxidant activity, total phenolic compounds, and photosynthetic pigments in radish (Raphanus sativus L.). 37 Nutripriming Nutripriming is the priming of seeds in a solution of nutrients to induce the metabolic processes in seeds and fulfil their nutritional requirements. 38 Priming with different macro and micronutrients regulates many biochemical and physiological processes during the initial seed germination stages.…”

“…After hormopriming with 1 mM IAA and halopriming with 1 % MgSO4, total phenolic compounds, including flavonoids, were greatest. Based on DPPH radical inhibition, IAA and AA may boost radish seedlings' antioxidant activity (Kanjevac et al, 2022). Seed germination and early seedling development of 10 summer annual species were tested in Petri dishes and pot trials to investigate how aqueous extracts of the fragrant herb Melissa officinalis affected these processes.…”
