Improvement of erectile function with Prelox: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover trial

Abstract: In a randomly allocated, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover design, 50 patients with mild to moderate erectile dysfunction (ED) were treated for 1 month with placebo or a combination of Larginine aspartate and Pycnogenol (Prelox). Patients reported sexual function from diaries. Testosterone levels and endothelial NO synthase (e-NOS) were monitored along with routine clinical chemistry. Intake of Pycnogenol for 1 month restored erectile function to normal. Intercourse frequency doubled. e-NOS in sperma… Show more

“…In a double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study, Korean red ginseng significantly increased erectile function scores, with 60% of men experiencing improved function (21). In a prospective, randomized, double-blinded crossover trial, a combination of 3 g of L-arginine and 80 mg of pycnogenol daily was shown to be highly effective for ED, doubling coital frequency and raising International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) mean scores from 15 to 27, with all men achieving scores exceeding 25 (22). Because pycnogenol has been shown to increase eNOS (23), is a potent antioxidant (24), and because it is available as a standardized supplement from a single manufacturer, it appears currently to be the antioxidant of choice for ED for those individuals not ingesting enough antioxidants in their diets, and at a dose of at least 80 mg.…”

“…An impressive amount of clinical data has been garnered for the use of L-arginine aspartate at a lower dosage (2,800-3,000 mg) when used with pycnogenol (80 mg) [140][141][142]. The most commonly tested supplement in this form is Prelox (Horphag Research Ltd, London, UK).…”

“…A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study of 50 participants with moderate ED (IIEF score of 11-17) and a mean age of 37 years was conducted [141]. The total daily dose of Prelox was 3,000 mg of L-arginine aspartate and 80 mg of pycnogenol.…”

“…4 Similarly, via the same pathway, a medicine known as Prelox (a combination of L-arginine aspartate and Pycnogenol) also improves the erectile function. 8 Historically, studies using the human corpus cavernosum have mostly used samples from donors receiving penile prosthesis, 4 but the general difficulty in obtaining samples from humans has led most researchers to work with rat and rabbit tissues.…”
