Improvement of Alternaria Leaf Blotch and Fruit Spot of Apple Control through the Management of Primary Inoculum

Abstract: Alternaria spp. is the causal agent of apple leaf blotch and fruit spot, diseases of recent appearance in Spain. The overwinter inoculum of Alternaria spp. is the source of primary infections in apple, thus the aim of this work was to optimize the control of infection through two environmentally friendly inoculum-management strategies, the removal of winter fallen leaves and the treatment of leaves with the biological agent Trichoderma asperellum to inhibit or prevent inoculum development in commercial orchard… Show more

“…The role of T. asperellum as antagonistic against different plant fungi pathogens such as A. solani (Ronnie-Gakegne and Martínez-Coca, 2018), Fusarium oxysporum (Hao et al, 2022, Rubio-Tinajero et al, 2022Sharma et al, 2022), Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, A. solani, Phytophthora sphave (Sharma et al, 2022), Puccinia striiformis (Esmail et al, 2022) have been demonstrated. Alternaria comprise a group of species causing several damages on different plants, including apple trees, to which they can induce leaf blotch and fruit spot (Cabrefiga et al, 2023).…”

“…Antifungal Activity. Fungal diseases caused by pathogens such as Valsa mali (V. mali), 83 Marssonina mali (M. mali), 84,85 Peronophythora litchi (P. litchii) and Rhizoctonia solani (R. solani) pose a serious threat to crop safety and growth, causing tremendous economic losses every year. 86,87 The effective management of fungal diseases presently relies chiefly on chemical pesticides such as carbendazim and acetostrobin.…”

“…Cabrefiga et al [ 8 ] described an integrated approach for the control of Alternaria spp., the causal agent of apple leaf blotch and fruit spot disease, which recently appearance in Spain, where it causes important losses. This disease is difficult to control and requires a lot of treatments during the season.…”
