Improvement of ACTH response to insulin tolerance test in female patients with rheumatoid arthritis due to tumor necrosis factor inhibition

Abstract: Objective: The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis evaluation has been conflicting in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. Our aim was to evaluate the HPA axis response to the insulin tolerance test (ITT) in premenopausal female patients with RA before and after anti-tumor necrosis factor therapy (anti-TNF therapy). Design: A comparative cross-sectional analysis. Subjects and methods: Ten females with RA and without previous anti-TNF therapy were included. Five healthy females were included as controls. “…Our finding confirms previous studies on the other autoimmune diseases and anti-TNF-α treatment and serum basal PRL levels. Daza et al found no differences in serum basal PRL levels in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) treated by adalimumab, RA patients without anti-TNF-α treatment or healthy controls 37 . Recently, Kreiner et al found no influences of etanercept on serum PRL levels in patients with polymyalgia rheumatica 38 .…”
