The current study focuses on the fabrication of calcium hydroxyapatite (Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2) (HA) in a nanorange having whiskers- and cubic-shaped uniform particle morphology. The synthesized HA particles hold a promising feature as reinforcement fillers in dental acrylic resin composite. They increase the efficacy of reinforcement by length and aspect ratio, uniformity, and monodispersity. Therefore, the acrylic resin was reinforced with the as-synthesized monodispersed HA filler particles (0.2–1 Wt%). The presence of filler particles in the composite had a noticeable effect on the tribological and mechanical properties of the dental material. The morphological effect of HA particles on these properties was also investigated, revealing that cubic-shaped particles showed better results than whiskers. The as-fabricated composite (0.4 Wt%) of the cubic-shaped filler particles showed maximum hardness and improved antiwear/antifriction properties. Particle loading played its part in determining the optimum condition, whereas particle size also influenced the reinforcement efficiency. The current study revealed that particle morphology, particle size, uniformity, etc., of HA fillers, greatly influenced the tribological and mechanical properties of the acrylic resin-based nanocomposite. Improvement in the tribological properties of HA particle-reinforced acrylic resin composites (HA–acrylic resin) followed the trend as AR < CmC < WC < CC.

Acid pretreatment plays an important role in the preparation of amorphous silica with high activity and high specific surface area before combustion process. However, some limitations and problems exist in the pretreatment process of previous literatures. On the basis of this, this work is aimed at simplifying the acid pretreatment process and combustion condition, which could present a more advantageous process for practical industrial applications. Then the removal percentage and behavior of metal impurities in rice husk is studied by ICP‐OES, and effects of acid pretreatment on properties of rice husk ash (RHA) at various combustion temperatures are comprehensively investigated in comparison with previous results by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X‐ray fluorescence (XRF), X‐ray diffractometer (XRD), and surface analyzer. The results suggest that the removal degree of each metal is various due to each chemical form in rice husk, of which removal percentage of K is especially remarkable. The contributions of simplified acid pretreatment to the properties of RHA are equally prominent: smaller nanoscale particles, higher purity, and specific surface area of above 200 m2/g. In addition, the pretreatment can also eliminate the crystallization and keep the high activity of RHA in combustion temperature range of 600–900°C. © 2017 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Environ Prog, 36: 830–837, 2017

This paper deals with synthesizing of nanocomposites of unsaturated polyester (UP) filled with nano silica and investigation the effect of silica content on the tribological behavior of UP and nanocomposites. Silica nanoparticles were prepared by burning rice husk ash (RHA) as an agricultural waste material. Three different percentages as 2%, 6% and 10% of nano silica were added to the unsaturated polyester and dispersed by using ultrasonic waves method. As a result of agglomeration and sedimentation of nano RHA particles, dispersing by ultrasonic waves was very effective to terminate these challenges. X-Rays diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) technics were used for characterization of materials. RHA-UP nanocomposites were tested for their tribo-performance by pin-on-disc machine. XRD demonstrated that white rice husk ash consists of amorphous silica. SEM demonstrated that silica particles were distributed uniformly and well embedded within the polyester matrix. Results showed an improvement in wear resistance with relatively stable friction coefficient with the addition of 10% nano silica. Adding 2 wt% nano RHA negatively affected the wear resistance of RHA-UP nanocomposite .The best tribological performance of 10% RHA-UP nanocomposites achieved at load 10N. Incorporation of RHA with unsaturated polyester has advantages of reducing pollution, making the pollutant RHA as a valuable material to produce low cost and lightweight products with modified properties. Silica enriched RHA could prove to be cheaper anti-wear additives for producing high performance unsaturated polyester composites such as brake pads.
