Improvement in Glycemic Control of Type 2 Diabetes After Successful Treatment of Hepatitis C Virus

Abstract: DAA-based eradication of HCV is associated with improved glycemic control in patients with diabetes as evidenced by decreased mean HbA and decreased insulin use. These endocrine benefits of SVR provide additional justification for considering antiviral treatment in all patients with diabetes.

“…It is evident that there are limited data to adequately answer this question, even if the few studies seem to indicate a clear beneficial effect on the control of metabolic condition. An assessment was made in a study that enrolled a large number of HCV patients with T2DM treated with DAAs by comparing patients with SVR and those who did not [9]. The clearance of HCV by DAAs was associated with a significant improvement in glycemic control and a decrease in the amount of antidiabetic drugs and in particular of the insulin dose used [9].…”

“…The HbA1c level fell shortly after LDV/SOF. The results in this study revealed a decline of HbA1c in both DM and non‐DM patients following the SVR, indicating that better sugar control may be a favorable result of successful DAA treatment in CHC patients . However, parameters associated with insulin, insulin resistance, and beta‐cell function remained unchanged in this study.…”
