Improvement in Fresh, Mechanical and Microstructural Properties of Fly Ash- Blast Furnace Slag Based Geopolymer Concrete By Addition of Nano and Micro Silica

Abstract: In this study, the effect of nano-silica (NS) and silica fume (SF) on workability, setting time, compressive strength and microstructural properties of fly ash-ground granulated blast furnace slag (FA-GGBFS) based geopolymer concrete (GPC) is investigated. Five mixtures of each containing 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, 2.0% and 2.5% NS and SF are prepared for this investigation. The optimum GPC mixture with NS resulted in compressive strength of 63 MPa and the SF modified GPC achieved a compressive strength of 59.59 MPa af… Show more

“…Silica fume is another Pozzolanic material that was used in this study. It contains very small-sized particles that are rich in SiO2 and works as an extremely reactive pozzolanic material [37]. The chemical and physical characteristics of these materials, as well as minimum requirements based on ASTM C1240 [36], are indicated in Tables 2 and 4.…”

“…The combined effect of utilizing nano silica and silica fume each at 1.5% improved the microstructure of geopolymer concrete and it also possessed good compressive strength [15]. This could be due to the high rate of alkali activation reaction that takes place in geopolymer concrete [14,15,17,28]. Figure 2 shows the comparative chart of compressive strength of geopolymer concrete in which nano silica is incorporated at various percentages by various researchers.…”

“…To achieve the fresh performances (i.e., lling ability, passing ability, and owing ability) cement, ne aggregate is increased in the mix, due to this, manufacturing price of a concrete mixture is relatively higher than convention concrete [44]. By adding mineral admixtures as SCM will help to get SCC in economical [11][12][13]46]. Fly ash is the most reliable and easily accessible industrial waste product.…”
