BACKGROUND The livestock industry requires high‐quality products, as well as improved productivity. There have been many studies regarding the utilization of feed additives aiming to increase productivity, enhance immune functions and prevent infectious diseases in livestock. Biofunctional feed additives would be beneficial not only for animal health, but also for consumers. In the present study, we utilized root and byproduct (stem and leaf) powders of Angelica gigas Nakai (AGN, Korean Danggui) as feed additives and examined the deposition of biofunctional compounds, such as decursin and decursinol angelate, into egg white and yolk. RESULTS We optimized the detection system for decursin and decursinol angelate, and determined the amounts of decursin and decursinol angelate derived from AGN byproducts (stem and leaf) as well as root. In Experiment 1, laying hens were fed with the dried AGN root powder and the effective compounds were detected in egg white and yolk. Subsequently, in Experiment 2, we examined AGN byproducts as an alternative feeding supplement. Additionally, biochemical parameters were analyzed to evaluate changes in the health of the hens by feeding AGN root powder. The results obtained indicated that decursin and decursinol angelate were stably transferred into egg white and yolk by feeding AGN byproducts as well as root. Intriguingly, plasma cholesterol levels were significantly decreased in a dose‐dependent manner, and those of interleukin‐1β, as an immune‐related biomarker, were considerably increased in the treated hens. CONCLUSION These results indicated that AGN root and byproducts (stem and leaf) could be utilized for the production of value‐added eggs and improving the health of hens in the poultry industry. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry

Resveratrol (RSV) and the ethanol extract of Angelica gigas Nakai (AGN Ex)-based nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared using the nanocrystal concept. AGN/RSV NPs with 224 nm hydrodynamic size, unimodal size distribution, and negative zeta potential values were developed with the emulsification and solvent evaporation techniques. The crystalline properties of AGN Ex and RSV were transformed during the emulsification and solvent evaporation processes, thus, AGN NPs and AGN/RSV NPs exhibited amorphous states. AGN/RSV NPs held up their initial hydrodynamic size after 24 h of incubation in serum-included media. Sustained release profiles (for 5 days) of decursin (D) and decursinol angelate (DA) (the representative markers of AGN Ex) and RSV were observed at normal physiological pH (pH 7.4). In ovarian cancer (SKOV-3) cells, although AGN/RSV NPs showed a lower cellular entry rate rather than AGN NPs, the cellular accumulated amount of AGN/RSV NPs was similar with that of AGN NPs after 4 h of incubation. The antiproliferation efficiency of AGN/RSV NPs group was significantly higher than the AGN Ex, AGN NPs, and AGN NPs + RSV groups in SKOV-3 cells. AGN/RSV NPs can be one of the promising candidates for therapeutic nanoplatforms against ovarian cancers.

Dissolution Enhancement in Cocoa Extract, Combining Hydrophilic Polymers through Hot-Melt Extrusion

The aim of this study was to improve the physicochemical properties of cocoa extract (CE) using hot-melt extrusion (HME) for pharmaceutical proposes. A mixture design was applied using three distinct hydrophilic polymeric matrices (Soluplus, Plasdone S630, and Eudragit E). Systems obtained by HME were evaluated using morphologic, chromatographic, thermic, spectroscopic, and diffractometric assays. The flow, wettability, and dissolution rate of HME powders were also assessed. Both CE and its marker theobromine proved to be stable under heating according to thermal analysis and Arrhenius plot under isothermal conditions. Physicochemical analysis confirmed the stability of CE HME preparations and provided evidence of drug–polymer interactions. Improvements in the functional characteristics of CE were observed after the extrusion process, particularly in dissolution and flow properties. In addition, the use of a mixture design allowed the identification of synergic effects by excipient combination. The optimized combination of polymers obtained considering four different aspects showed that a mixture of the Soluplus, Plasdone S630, and Eudragit E in equal proportions produced the best results (flowability index 88%; contact angle 47°; dispersibility 7.5%; and dissolution efficiency 87%), therefore making the pharmaceutical use of CE more feasible.
