Improved Treatment of Childhood ALL in Malaysia

Abstract: The survival rate of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) has reached >80-90% in developed countries, which is a triumph of modern medicine. This success is due to implementation of contemporary treatment protocols, optimal application of risk stratification, risk-directed multi-agent chemotherapy regimens, and improved supportive care. Unfortunately, such improvements have not translated to Low Middle Income Countries (LMICs), where 90% of the world's children live. The estimated 5 year survival ra… Show more

“…7 Results in Malaysia showed the 5-year OS and EFS for standard risk (SR) group were 86.6 and 83.4% and 65.7 and 58.2% for the high risk (HR) group. 8 Observation up to 10 years in Vietnam showed the OS were 70.7% (SR) and 51.5% (HR) with EFS of 66.1% (SR) and 47.3% (HR). 9 It is possible that there is bias in published reports, and in many LMICs, real-life results may be much lower than those published.…”

“…This form of cancer, if well managed, has a very high chance of cure, whereby developed countries with access to top chemotherapy and recent protocols record more than an 80–90% survival rate. The five-year survival rate in the Asian region is 44.3–80%, and upper-middle and high-income countries reported five-year event-free survival rates of 74% [ 5 ]. Since relapses still occur, newer treatments of drugs to treat this condition are warranted.…”
