Improved TKM-TR methods for PAPR reduction of DCO-OFDM visible light communications

Abstract: The dc-biased optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DCO-OFDM) system is experimentally demonstrated as an appealing candidate in future visible light communication (VLC) system. However, the intrinsic high PAPR drawback that the DCO-OFDM system suffers from still needs to be addressed and few effective approach has been found so far. To deal with this problem, in this paper, the tone reservation (TR) technique based the time domain kernel matrix (TKM-TR) schemes for reducing the PAPR are studied … Show more

“…Hei et al. [28] proposed a tone reservation method based on time domain kernel matrix (TKM‐TR) techniques, which was investigated and used in the DCO‐OFDM system, in order to reduce PAPR. Despite its excellent complementary cumulative distribution function (CCDF), it has a poor BER performance.…”

“…However, these methods can reduce the PAPR at the cost of transmission power consumption and computational complexity. Recently, tone reservation (TR)-based PAPR reduction schemes for avoiding transmission power consumption were proposed to DCO-OFDM VLC systems [6], [7]. However, the computational complexity associated with the TR method is high in searching peak-canceling signals.…”

“…The study in [13] used a semidefinite relaxation method for tone injection to reduce the PAPR for the DCO-OFDM. The branch and bound method [14] and tone reservation method [15] were also proposed to lower the impact of the high PAPR in VLC systems. Nevertheless, these methods reduce the PAPR at the sacrifice of computational complexity and channel resources.…”
