Improved Synchronverters with Bounded Frequency and Voltage for Smart Grid Integration

Abstract: Abstract-Synchronverters are grid-friendly inverters that mimic conventional synchronous generators and play an important role in integrating different types of renewable energy sources, electric vehicles, energy storage systems, etc., to the smart grid. In this paper, an improved synchronverter is proposed to make sure that its frequency and voltage always stay within given ranges, while maintaining the function of the original synchronverter. Furthermore, the stability region characterised by the system para… Show more

“…By changing the inertia constant J and a different tunable constant D f , the desired response speed was achieved. In [84], a synchronverter with analytically determined bounds for frequency and voltage was introduced. In traditional synchronverters, saturation units were employed for this purpose, but such an approach can lead to instability due to wind-up.…”

“…However, to obtain a better performance that resists the intermittency of RESs, relatively large storage is preferable. An improved synchronverter that limits its voltage and frequency to within acceptable ranges is presented in [75].…”

“…The stability analysis and control parameter tuning of the synchronverter are not easy due to its characteristics of more complicated nonlinearity. Global stability of the synchronverter was investigated in [22]. However, the stability analysis of the synchronverter in an unbalanced power grid, as well as the impact of the modified controller to the stability of the synchronverter, will be more complicated, and has not been examined yet.…”
