Improved spiral antenna with a new semi‐fractal reflector for short‐range sensing

Abstract: An improved meandered spiral antenna with a new semi‐fractal reflector is designed and fabricated. It is considered as a unidirectional circular polarised broadband antenna having high gain. To improve the impedance bandwidth, the top layer of the antenna is shaped as equiangular Archimedean lines which its outer area meanders. The reflector consists of many fractal hexagonal shape cells. It is implemented at the back of the spiral antenna in order to improve the gain and circular polarisation. The simulated a… Show more

“…Their constant impedance along the frequency facilitates the design of the multiplier circuit, since the circuit dependence on the antenna impedance is eliminated. The two spiral-shape antennas most typically used in practice are the Archimedean spiral [11,16] and the equiangular spiral [17], both circularly polarized. The design of the harvesting element will be based on the Archimedean spiral antenna due to its simpler geometry.…”

“…and the reduction of antenna diameter [9]- [11]. In addition, the composite antenna is also an important miniaturization method, such as the equal angle helix and Archimedean spiral combined sky line, and the antenna terminal loading lumped resistance [12]- [14]. The realization of low profile is mainly achieved by adding absorbing materials to the reflector, using EBG (Electromagnetic Band Gap) structure as the reflector, special-shaped reflector and bending balun.…”

“…The 3-dB AR bandwidth was from 1.63 to 10 GHz, and the overall size of the antenna was 0.348λ 1.63 GHz × 0.206λ 1.63 GHz (diameter × height). In [13], a spiral antenna using a semifractal reflector and a combination of the equiangular Archimedean lines and a meander line was designed to obtain a 3-dB AR bandwidth of 0.9-4.37 GHz. The overall size of the antenna was 0.3λ 0.9 GHz × 0.3λ 0.9 GHz × 0.15λ 0.9 GHz .…”
