This multilevel inverter type summarizes an output voltage of medium voltage based on a series connection of power cells employing standard configurations of low-voltage components. The main problems of cascaded switched-capacitor multilevel inverters (CSCMLIs) are the harmful reverse flowing current of inductive loads, the large number of switches, and the surge current of the capacitors. As the number of switches increases, the reliability of the inverter decreases. To address these issues, a new CSCMLI is proposed using two modules containing asymmetric DC sources to generate 13 levels. The main novelty of the proposed configuration is the reduction of the number of switches while increasing the maximum output voltage. Despite the many similarities, the presented topology differs from similar topologies. Compared to similar structures, the direction of some switches is reversed, leading to a change in the direction of current flow. By incorporating the lowest number of semiconductors, it was demonstrated that the proposed inverter has the lowest cost function among similar inverters. The role of switched-capacitor inrush current in the selection of switch, diode, and DC source for inverter operation in medium and high voltage applications is presented. The inverter performance to supply the inductive loads is clarified. Comparison of the simulation and experimental results validates the effectiveness of the proposed inverter topology, showing promising potentials in photovoltaic, buildings, and domestic applications. This study introduces a new switching scheme for nine‐level cascaded H‐bridge (CHB) inverter to comply with the harmonic standards (IEC 61000‐2‐12, IEC 61000‐3‐6, and ER G4/5) using an improved selective harmonic minimisation pulse amplitude modulation (SHM‐PAM) scheme. In this scheme, the optimised switching instances and variable DC‐link voltages are determined by solving some new constraints based cost functions using particle swarm optimisation (PSO) technique. The theoretical analysis and optimisation results of the proposed modulation scheme are validated through MATLAB simulations and experimentally on a laboratory‐scale prototype of CHB inverter. The proposed modulation scheme utilises a minimal number of switching instances in a fundamental period and optimisation variables in the problem formulation in comparison to conventional SHE‐PWM and SHE‐PAM schemes. The key performance of the proposed scheme in terms of harmonic and loss analysis is evaluated over the wide range of the power factors and modulation index. Finally, the suitability of the proposed scheme is tested for the closed‐loop speed control of a 5 hp, 415 V three‐phase induction motor.

The application of iterative techniques for solving the Selective Harmonic Elimination Pulse Width Modulation (SHE‐PWM) problem, such as the Newton–Raphson (NR) method, can tend to get stuck at local optima in the solution space. Additionally, these methods may be sensitive to the initial value estimation of the solution. In contrast, metaheuristic approaches demonstrate resilience in seeking out the optimal solution. As such, this study utilizes the Runge–Kutta (RUN) metaheuristic optimization algorithm to demonstrate the SHE‐PWM technique in multilevel inverters (MLIs), including 5‐ and 7‐level modified H‐bridge (MHB) topology and a 9‐level asymmetric cascaded H‐bridge (CHB) inverter topology. The switching angles are obtained by varying the modulation index from 0.01 to 1.0 in steps of 0.01 for 5‐, 7‐, and 9‐level MLIs. The performance of the RUN algorithm in minimizing the total harmonic distortion (THD) value is verified through simulations in MATLAB/Simulink software. The superiority of RUN is established by comparing the results with state‐of‐the‐art metaheuristic algorithms, such as the Differential Evolution (DE), Genetic Algorithm (GA), and Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO). Additionally, the switching angles obtained through RUN are validated by hardware experiments. According to the simulation and experimental results, the proposed RUN method exhibits better performance in terms of objective function values, algorithm robustness, fundamental harmonic magnitude, and THD values. The findings confirm the elimination of fifth harmonic, fifth, and seventh harmonics, and fifth, seventh, and ninth harmonics in 5‐, 7‐, and 9‐level MLIs, respectively.
