Improved Rate Capability of Li/Li3V2(PO4)3Cell for Advanced Lithium Secondary Battery

Abstract: Lithium vanadium phosphate, Li 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 was prepared by a simple solid state route. It was found that making a fine powder of Li 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 by the mechanical milling is very effective for increasing the insertion/extraction of lithium from Li 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 structure. In charge/discharge test, the ball-milled Li 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 sample exhibited a higher initial discharge capacity of 174 mAh/g in the voltage range of 3.0-4.8 V, compared with pure Li 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 sample (152 mAh/g). Furthermore, … Show more

“…Also, it is greater than the capacity values reported by Zhong et al (119 mAh g À1 ) [20] for the combustion synthesized Li 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 /C cathode, which is noteworthy. Similarly, the capacity values of 174 mAh g À1 (C/10 rate), 160 mAh g À1 C/5 rate) and 96 mAh g À1 (10C rate) exhibited by Li 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 /C (850 8C) cathode in the 4.8 V limit corresponding to the extraction of three lithium per formula unit are either comparable [21] or superior [22,23] than the reported values, with an exception of two [24,25].…”
