Improved path-loss model for predicting TV coverage for secondary access

Abstract: Path-loss model is essential for proper planning of emerging technologies in the broadcast frequency band. Characterisation of the radio channel is paramount for accurate prediction of TV coverage, and achievement of peaceful coexistence between the TV (primary users) and other new infrastructures (secondary users). In this paper, field strength measurements are conducted along six routes that spanned through urban, suburban and rural areas of Kwara State, Nigeria. The measurement results are compared with pat… Show more

“…The selected propagation models are the Hata [18], COST 231 [19], Egli [20], ECC-33 [21], Davidson [22], and ILORIN [5]. These models were chosen based on the fact that the VHF and UHF operating frequencies fall within the frequency validity range of the selected models.…”

“…Recently, a number of experimental campaigns have been documented on the performance of existing path loss models in the VHF and UHF bands in specific terrains over diverse climates [3][4][5]. Most of these works are based on measurements conducted in selected locations and models, which are only suitable and applicable for the particular region of interest.…”

“…For instance, Nasir et al in [3] presented an optimized path loss model for predicting TV coverage for secondary access. In the work, statistical analysis was employed to determine the model with least errors and further optimization work was carried out on Hata -Davidson's model for better fit result.…”

“…Therefore, we have used Longley-Rice Irregular Terrain model(ITM) to compare with the measured path loss data collected at different places in India. In [10] Field strength measurements were conducted along six routes that spanned urban, suburban and rural areas of Kwara State, Nigeria. Measurement results were then compared with pathloss prediction of eight widely used empirical models.…”
