Improved microgrid arrangement for integrated imaging polarimeters

Abstract: For almost 20 years, microgrid polarimetric imaging systems have been built using a 2×2 repeating pattern of polarization analyzers. In this Letter, we show that superior spatial resolution is achieved over this 2×2 case when the analyzers are arranged in a 2×4 repeating pattern. This unconventional result, in which a more distributed sampling pattern results in finer spatial resolution, is also achieved without affecting the conditioning of the polarimetric data-reduction matrix. Proof is provided theoretical… Show more

“…We want to note that the analysis of DoFP polarimeters performance presented in this manuscript is limited to optimizing metrics that measure the noise amplification from intensity measures at the CCD camera to the final polarimetric measurements. However, MPAs were shown to be spatially-modulated channeled systems [20,[25][26][27] and further analysis could be performed in a future based on Fourier-domain processing in order to study some considerations towards the effect of misalignment on the channeled nature of DoFP polarimeters.…”

“…This could be mitigated by optimizing the sampling of the point-spread function by the imaging array. Also, dedicated Fourier-based reconstructor algorithms 76,77 can be used to reduce aliasing. And indeed also the micropolarizer conguration could be modified to optimize the extraction of the polarization data.…”

“…About the spatial arrangement, every quadrant is located diagonally to its orthogonal counterpart, but other arrangements exist. 13 This filter array imaging suffers from sparsity, i.e., each pixel senses only one polarization channel. It introduces instantaneous fieldof-view errors 14 when reconstructing 2D polarization scene information from sparse data.…”
