Improved Measurement of the CP-Violating Asymmetry Amplitude sin2beta

Abstract: We present updated results on time-dependent CP -violating asymmetries in neutral B decays to several CP eigenstates. The measurements use a data sample of about 62 million Υ (4S) → BB decays collected between 1999 and 2001 by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B Factory at SLAC. In this sample we study events in which one neutral B meson is fully reconstructed in a final state containing a charmonium meson and the flavor of the other neutral B meson is determined from its decay products. The a… Show more

“…Such a measurement would definitely not be in conflict with the recent measurements of CP violation in the B d system, which confirms the standard-model predictions at the 10% level (Abe et al, 2002b;Aubert et al, 2002b). But in the long run, after new physics has already been discovered, inclusive rare B decays will also play an important role in analyzing in greater detail the underlying new dynamics.…”

“…Moreover, Glashow-Iliopoulos-Maiani suppression is not active in loop diagrams involving the top quarks, which leads to experimentally accessible rare decays and to large CP-violating effects within B physics. Thus the CP violation in the B system represents an important independent test of the standard-model description of CP violation (see Abe et al, 2002b;Aubert et al, 2002b). B-meson decays also allow for a rich Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) phenomenology as well as stringent tests of the unitarity of the CKM matrix.…”

“…But, the penguin process includes emission and absorption of a W boson, so each vertex has to be weighted by a ratio of quark and W mass, which makes the t quark domi- imentally it is very clean [25]. Since the top quark dominates the loop, the CKM factors in both tree and penguin amplitudes carry approximately the same phases, and the time-dependent asymmetry has a simple form:…”

“…Recently CP violation has also been observed in the decays of B mesons [131,132]. Experimentally CP violation has only been observed in weak interactions.…”
