Improved measurement of neutral current coherentπ0production on carbon in a few-GeV neutrino beam

Abstract: The SciBooNE Collaboration reports a measurement of neutral current coherent π 0 production on carbon by a muon neutrino beam with average energy 0.8 GeV. The separation of coherent from inclusive π 0 production has been improved by detecting recoil protons from resonant π 0 production. We measure the ratio of the neutral current coherent π 0 production to total charged current cross sections to be (1.16 ± 0.24) × 10 −2 . The ratio of charged current coherent π + to neutral current coherent π 0 production is c… Show more

“…The CC coherent pion production reaction was also studied and consistent results with the K2K findings were obtained [43]. This time, the NC coherent π 0 production cross section was also measured and found to be consistent with the predictions from PCAC based models [44]. The inclusive CC cross section was also measured in SciBooNE.…”

“…Adapted from [163]. 6 There exist two other recent measurements of NC π 0 production (K2K [18] and SciBooNE [168]), which however do not provide absolutely normalized cross sections, but report only the ratios σ π σ ( )…”

“…Many measurements of NC [16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24] and CC [19,[25][26][27][28][29][30][31][32][33]] coherent pion production have been made at neutrino energies of 1 ≲ E ν ≲ 100 GeV using both ν μ andν μ beams and a variety of scattering target materials (carbon, neon, aluminum, argon, Freon, glass, marble, and iron). Measurements made before the discovery of neutrino oscillations were mostly made at E ν > 10 GeV.…”

“…The only measurements of NC coherent pion production at E ν < 2 GeV were made recently by the MiniBooNE [22] and SciBooNE [23] experiments. The MiniBooNE measurement was made using a mineral oil target (CH 2 ) at a peak E ν of 0.7 GeV.…”

“…In addition, when included in the MiniBooNE pion production fits, the data are consistent with the nominal NEUT model at 1σ and with zero cross section at 2σ. The NC coherent pion production data [76] differ from NEUT by 15%, within the measurement uncertainty of 20%. To account for the difference and the uncertainty, we conservatively assign a 30% overall uncertainty to x NCcohπ .…”
