Improved limit on the muon electric dipole moment

Abstract: Three independent searches for an electric dipole moment (EDM) of the positive and negative muons have been performed, using spin precession data from the muon g À 2 storage ring at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Details on the experimental apparatus and the three analyses are presented. Since the individual results on the positive and negative muons, as well as the combined result, d ¼ ð0:0 AE 0:9Þ Â 10 À19 e cm, are all consistent with zero, we set a new muon EDM limit, jd j < 1:8 Â 10 À19 e cm (95% C.L.). … Show more

“…In the lepton sector, the current measurements and SM predictions of the muon [43,44] and electron [45,46] anomalous magnetic moments and the limits on their EDMs [47][48][49] imply the following 95% probability bounds: [4] is that of identifying which operators, hence which observables, are sensitive to the strength of the Higgs interactions, rather than merely to the value of the New Physics scale M . In what follows we will discuss this point in greater detail and, starting from the analysis of refs.…”

“…Because is tilted with respect to B the spin component along the magnetic field oscillates with an amplitude that depends linearly on the EDM. In the muon g-2 experiment at BNL this was used to limit the muon EDM [11]. It will be used again in the new muon g-2 experiment at Fermilab [22].…”
