Improved interfacial bonding strength of silicone rubber/carbon fiber modified by dopamine

Abstract: A kind of silicone rubber (SR)/carbon fiber (CF)@polydopamine (PDA) flexible composites were prepared in this work. CF was modified by oxidative self‐polymerization of dopamine (DA), and the effect of DA concentration on properties of SR/CF@PDA composites was researched. The transverse fiber bundle tests have shown that SR/CF@PDA‐1.5 has the best interfacial bonding performance. Compared with SR/CF, tensile strength and elongation at break of SR/CF@PDA‐1.5 were increased by 61.7% and 68.4%, respectively. Resul… Show more

“…Polyurethane-coated carbon fiber (CF) can be added to the process for producing thermoplastic polymer composites with improved thermal and mechanical properties, as well as durability, as an effective reinforcing filler and an improved cross-linking process. Electron beam irradiation (EB) can be added [ 21 ]. In the framework of the technological process [ 21 ], composites based on polyamide 6 (PA) with different HC content from 1 to 10 wt.% were made by melt compounding and compression molding and then irradiated with various doses of EB.…”

“…1,2 In the present era, carbon fiber reinforced rubber composites (CFRC) are widely used in aerospace, military, defense, automotive, and in many other applications. 3,4 Generally, the high-temperature carbonization process is widely used for the manufacture of polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based carbon fibers (CFs). However, at high temperatures, the polar elements on the surface of the carbon fiber are eliminated, resulting in a weaker interfacial bond between the carbon fiber and the substrate.…”

“…Song et al 25 improved the interfacial adhesion properties between carbon fiber (CF) and polyimide (PI) surfaces by coating biogenic PDA on the CF surface, and the results showed that the tensile strength and modulus of PDA‐CF/PI composites were significantly better than those of CF/PI composites, indicating that the introduction of PDA significantly improved the interfacial compatibility of CF and PI matrix. Bo et al 26 modified CF through dopamine oxidation self‐polymerization, and studied the effect of dopamine concentration on the properties of silicone rubber (SR)/CF@PDA composites. The results show that SR/CF@PDA‐1.5 has the best interface bonding properties.…”
