Improved formulations and an Adaptive Large Neighborhood Search heuristic for the integrated berth allocation and quay crane assignment problem

Abstract: This paper focuses on the integrated berth allocation and quay crane assignment problem in container terminals. We consider the decrease in the marginal productivity of quay cranes and the increase in handling time due to deviation from the desired position. We consider a continuous berth, discretized in small equal-sized sections. A number of enhancements over the state-of-the-art formulation and an Adaptive Large Neighborhood Search (ALNS) heuristic are presented. Computational results reveal that the enhanc… Show more

“…Given an initial solution, the heuristic sequentially destroys and repairs the solution in order to improve the objective and is commonly used to solve routing problems, see for example Ribeiro and Laporte (2012) and Hemmelmayr et al (2012). In the maritime domain, ALNS heuristics have been used to solve two-dimensional allocation problems, see for example Mauri et al (2016) and Iris et al (2017). However, to the authors' knowledge, ALNS has not previously been applied to stowage problems, such as the 2DRSSP.…”

“…Based on this work, Iris et al (2015) studied two variants of the crane assignment: time-variant and time-invariant and proposed new mathematical formulations. Iris et al (2017) improved the mathematical formulation provided by Meisel and Bierwirth (2009), introducing valid inequalities and variable fixing methods. The same problem but with a more realistic objective was investigated by Liang et al (2009).…”

“…The QCs work-schedule is a set of decisions that include the QCs assignment to bays of the vessel and the loading order between the bays. The QC work-schedule is mostly determined in earlier stages with berth allocation and QC assignment problem (See , Turkogullari et al (2016), Iris et al (2017)).…”
