Improved discrimination of subglacial and periglacial erosion using 10Be concentration measurements in subglacial and supraglacial sediment load of the Bossons glacier (Mont Blanc massif, France)

Abstract: Deciphering the complex interplays between climate, uplift and erosion is not straightforward and estimating present‐day erosion rates can provide useful insights. Glaciers are thought to be powerful erosional agents, but most published ‘glacial’ erosion rates combine periglacial, subglacial and proglacial erosion processes. Within a glaciated catchment, sediments found in subglacial streams originate either from glacial erosion of substratum or from the rock walls above the glacier that contribute to the supr… Show more

“…The present-day retreat rate was estimated to be 0.53 ± 0.24 mm year À1 for SZ1, and that is based on 4 years of stream sedimentary load measurements at the Bossons watershed outlet (Guillon et al, 2015b(Guillon et al, , 2018 and by taking the lithologic origin of the clasts (Godon et al, 2013) and their exposure history into account (Guillon et al, 2015a). The summation of the rockfalls from the rockfall catalogue also provides an estimate of the present-day erosion.…”

“…Lliboutry and Reynaud, 1981). All clasts initially located close to the same vertical are mixed in the ablation area by the ice melt that clusters them to the surface ( Figure 2C) (Godon et al, 2013;Guillon et al, 2015a). Clasts follow the flow lines within the glacier.…”

“…However, the strong delta dynamics is suggested to cause the slight variance of derived/calculated accumulation rates between the cores. Variable fluxes of glacial sediment would result in a variable dilution by generally low concentration 10 Be glacial sediments (Delunel et al, 2014;Guillon et al, 2015). In contrast to the 10 Be concentrations, the flood record shows single peaks with very high frequencies composed of local episodic events of individual lakes.…”
