Improved DGS parameter extraction method for the polarization purity of circularly polarized microstrip antenna

Abstract: An improved method of parameter extraction of the most popular dumbbell shaped defected ground structure (DGS) is developed, which removes the drawbacks of the earlier approaches of parameter extraction methods. The proposed method is validated considering a circularly polarized (CP) microstrip antenna integrated with dumbbell shaped DGS for application of suppression of cross polarization. A set of fabricated laboratory prototypes, with and without DGS, is experimentally studied. The results show that the int… Show more

“…In order to understand the role of defects created in the ground plane, one has to understand the physics behind the DGS [16]- [17]. The cross polar component level of the linearly polarized microstrip patch antenna is oftenally increased if defective structures are created in the ground plane below (not under) the microstrip patch.…”

“…15 An annular ring slot with linked L-slot, fractal slot and dumbbell shaped slots were introduced in the ground plane to obtain the ARBW's of 9.68%, 1.28% and 1.06%, respectively. [16][17][18] A linked rectangular narrow slots were etched from the ground plane to obtain the CP BW of 0.381%. 19 Fractal trees were embedded in the ground plane to find the 99 MHz AR band.…”
