Improved Design of Sliding-Mode Controllers Based on the Requirements of MPPT Techniques

Abstract: In many grid-connected applications a dc/dc switching converter is usually connected between the PV modules and the inverter. This paper presents an improved procedure to design a sliding controller for the PV system, which drives the PV voltage to follow a reference provided by an external MPPT algorithm and mitigates the perturbations caused by the irradiance changes and oscillations in the bulk-voltage. By considering that the switching surface is the linear combination of the input capacitor current and th… Show more

“…A converter can be operated with an accurate voltage regulation at PSCs and load variations because this adds one more integral part into the sliding surface of a controller [54]. The main advantage of this technique is that the system stability is retained over the parameters, input values, and load variations within the PV system [54,55].…”

“…To ensure the existence of the sliding-mode, thus the system global stability, three conditions must be fulfilled [44]: transversality, reachability and equivalent control. However, Sira-Ramirez demonstrated in [45] that equivalent control and reachability conditions are equivalent.…”

“…The mathematical representation of the transversality test is given in Expression (12) [44], which means that the control signal u must be present into the switching function derivative (11). The fulfillment of condition (12) ensures the controller is able to modify the behavior of the switching function Ψ, which makes it possible to drive Ψ to operate within the sliding surface Φ.…”

“…The reachability condition is used to determinate the capacity of system to reach the sliding surface from whatever arbitrary point. The reachability depends of the sign of transversality [30], and therefore its definition is:…”
