Improved constraints on parton distributions using LHCb, ALICE and HERA heavy-flavour measurements and implications for the predictions for prompt atmospheric-neutrino fluxes

Abstract: The impact of measurements of heavy-flavour production in deep inelastic ep scattering and in pp collisions on parton distribution functions is studied in a QCD analysis at nextto-leading order. Recent combined results of inclusive and heavy-flavour production cross sections in deep inelastic scattering at HERA are investigated together with heavy-flavour production measurements at the LHC. Differential cross sections of charm-and beautyhadron production measured by the LHCb collaboration at the centre-of-mass… Show more

“…Our findings at NLO support the use of masses renormalized in the MS scheme for further fits of this kind (see e.g. [55,56]). We also show for the first time how LHC charm production data extrapolated to the full phase-space can be used to constrain NNLO PDF fits, suggesting a reduction of the uncertainties in the gluon distributions of various widely used global PDF fits [57][58][59].…”

“…We expect that the large scale uncertainties here dominate the uncertainties at even higher rapidity. PDF uncertainties are typically smaller than the scale uncertainties for forward charm production at these energies [50]. Results for the p T and y distributions, in similar agreement with the LHCb data, are obtained for D ± and D 0 ,D 0 production, used below as sources of ν µ +ν µ and ν e +ν e .…”

“…If an improved description of the p T distributions will be obtained, then absolute differential cross-sections in p T , besides rapidity distributions for each fixed p T bin, could be used for fitting the PDF parameters. If predictions with a reduced scale uncertainty band become available, then PDF fits using absolute data (instead of ratios) can be performed with reduced uncertainty and improved constraints on the heavy-quark masses too, whose values can also be fitted together with the PDF parameters [27].…”
