Improved chemical vapor transport growth of transition metal dichalcogenides

Abstract: In the crystal growth of transition metal dichalcogenides by the Chemical Vapor Transport method (CVT), the choice of the transport agent plays a key role. We have investigated the effect of various chemical elements and compounds on the growth of TiSe 2 , MoSe 2 , TaS 2 and TaSe 2 and found that pure I 2 is the most suitable for growing TiSe 2 , whereas transition metal chlorides perform best with Mo-and Ta-chalcogenides. The use of TaCl 5 as a transport agent in the CVT process allows to selectively growth e… Show more

“…After one week growth time, the quartz tube was quickly pulled out and then quenched into cold water. Consistent with the earlier reports [24], the as-grown single crystals show thin flake-like shapes and gold-shining color, with typical sizes are in the range (3 ∼ 10) × (2 ∼ 3) × (0.02 ∼ 0.08) mm 3 . “…The 2D-CDW often reveals itself in layered transition-metal dichalcogenides and rareearth tritellurides [13,14,[23][24][25][26]. Researchers began to study the charge transport properties of 2D-CDW systems (1T-TaS 2 ) about forty years ago: Refs.…”

“…From this point of view, source materials and the mineralizer can be regarded as the most decisive factors in the growth of TMD crystals. Thereafter, the reaction conditions could be optimized case by case, typically in an empirical way, and some representative reactions are summarized in Table 1 …”

“…To prepare the Ag + -intercalated TaS 2 , single-crystalline 2H-and 4Hb-TaS 2 were grown via chemical vapor transport. 20) Polycrystalline TaS 2 and I 2 (5 mg/cm 3 ) as a transporting agent were added to a closed quartz tube. They were sintered using a temperature gradient from 800 to 900°C for seven days.…”
