Improved bolus arrival time and arterial input function estimation for tracer kinetic analysis in DCE‐MRI

Abstract: Purpose: To develop a methodology for improved estimation of bolus arrival time (BAT) and arterial input function (AIF) which are prerequisites for tracer kinetic analysis of dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) data and to verify the applicability of the same in the case of intracranial lesions (brain tumor and tuberculoma). Materials and Methods:A continuous piecewise linear (PL) model (with BAT as one of the free parameters) is proposed for concentration time curve C(t) in T 1 -wei… Show more

“…14 For the calculation of perfusion indices, a k ep map showing abnormal regions around the lesion were segmented, and the resulting mask was overlaid on CBV and CBF maps to obtain CBV, CBF, K trans , and v e values. We quantified relative CBV (rCBV) and CBF (rCBF) by placing the same-size region of interest on the contralateral (healthy) side of the brain.…”

“…Possible voxel-wise time-delays between the AIF and tissue response were automatically corrected for using a previously published approach. 22 Voxel-wise DR 1 -time curves were also analyzed by estimating the maximum peak enhancement (Peak enh ), time-to-peak (TTP), area under the curve (AUC), wash-in rate, and wash-out rate.…”

“…Several approaches for automatic estimation of BAT have been proposed. [25][26][27][28][29] Huisman et al 25 developed a three-component model for prostate with BAT as a parameter estimated by fitting a curve that focuses on the most probable slope. In Ref.…”

“…26, BAT TRF was calculated using the concentration time curve of the entire region of interest (ROI) and measuring the BAT from the intersection of the lines joining a predetermined number of adjacent points and then using the same BAT for all of the voxels within the same ROI. Automatic detection of BAT, based on fitting piecewise linear functions to the concentration curve, has been proposed by Cheong et al 27 with a two-segment linear model and by Singh et al 29 with a three-piece linear model. Studies have shown that inaccurate estimation of BAT can lead to uncertainty in the PK estimates.…”
