Improved biosorption of phenol using crosslinked chitosan beads after modification with histidine and Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Abstract: The ability of chitosan beads modified with histidine and Saccharomyces cerevisiae using glutaraldehyde as a crosslinking agent (SC-HIS-CCBs) for the biosorption of phenol was studied. The surface of SC-HIS-CCBs was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. Batch biosorption experiments using the SC-HIS-CCBs were then performed by varying contact time, solution pH (2.0 ~ 7.0), and initial phenol concentration (25 ~ 250 mg/L). The isotherm a… Show more

“…The van't Hoff equation is the basic method for calculating adsorption thermodynamic parameters [18][19][20]. Thermodynamic parameters associated with the adsorption -that is, standard free energy change (ΔG), standard enthalpy change (ΔH), and standard entropy change (ΔS) -were calculated using equations 5 and 6: (5) …where R (8.314 J/mol/K) is the ideal gas constant, T (K) is the absolute temperature, K L (L/g) is the standard thermodynamic equilibrium constant, and ΔG is the standard free energy change of sorption (kJ/mol).…”

“…Авторами роботи [16] досліджено новий біосорбент для посилення адсорбції іонів Ni (II) з водних розчи нів, в якості якого використано глутаровий альдегід, зшитий хітозаном в кульки, модифіковані гистидином Saccharomyces CEREVISIAE (SCHisБКК). Описані дослідження продовжуються у роботах [3-5, 17, 18] з використання магнітомічених клітин дріжджів для біосорбції іонів важких металів, зокрема і заліза, міді на модельних розчинах.…”

“…Phenol, or previously also known as carbolic acid is an aromatic organic compound consisting of a phenyl group (-C 6 H 5 ) bonded to a hydroxyl group (-OH). Phenol-containing substances are toxic, carcinogenic, mutagenic and lead to teratogenic defects [2]. In Malaysia, phenol is designated as scheduled wastes under SW 3 group in First Schedule Environmental Quality Regulations 2005, which is "wastes containing principally organic constituents which may contain metals and inorganics materials" by Malaysia's Department of Environment (DOE).…”
