“…The total fissile mass of 235 U is close to 10 g and the 238 U mass is larger than 200 g. Self-shielding in the pellets has been estimated by MCNP calculation to be lower than 30%. The two GENIE 36 pulsed neutron generators from EADS SODERN are operated at an average total emission of 5.5 10 9 n/s [4 ], with a 140 kV high voltage, ~100 Hz pulse frequency, and 200 μs pulse duration. The signal from 3 He tube is processed by current amplifiers and a 64 channels MEDAS dating electronic card.…”

“…The Nuclear Measurement Laboratory (LMN) of CEA Cadarache is exploring options for implementing a matrix effect correction on the industrial neutron measurement station P0 which is based on the Differential Die-away Technique [2] [3]. This matrix effect correction method is based on the use of a drum 3 He monitor signal sensitive to matrix materials [4]. In order to validate this method, the differences between experimental results and MCNPX calculations [5] have been first investigated with the "PROMETHEE 6" R&D cell of CEA Cadarache, which was modified to approach the neutron moderation and absorption properties of the industrial P0 cell.…”

“…The performances of the activity measurement methods particularly depend on the contaminant to be quantified, and on the waste matrix (density, composition), which can greatly impact the net signal by scattering and absorbing the interrogating and detected radiations or particles. Matrix effects may be of great importance and induce the development of dedicated correction methods [8][9][10] in order to reduce the associated uncertainty.…”

“…The application of passive and active neutron measurements on low density waste drums (less than 0.4) is continuously being studied at the Nuclear Measurement Laboratory of CEA Cadarache (France) [5,6,[8][9][10][11][12]. As an example, the waste package dealt with in this paper is a high density drum ($2.35), which consists of about 15% (in weight) of materials contaminated by radioactive or nuclear matter (such as gloves, overshoes, laboratory tools, machines, etc.…”
