Improved Adhesion of Nonfluorinated ZnO Nanotriangle Superhydrophobic Layer on Glass Surface by Spray-Coating Method

Abstract: In this present work, a superhydrophobic glass surface comprising zinc oxide nanotriangles (ZnO-nt) and nontoxic silylating agent was developed via a cost-effective spray-coating technology. ZnO-nt was synthesized by a hydrothermal method. Poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) and dimethyldiethoxysilane (DMDEOS) were used as nontoxic (nonfluoro) silylating agents. The morphology and crystallinity of ZnO-nt were studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques. ZnO-nt with pol… Show more

“…The future work on SBA coatings should be focused on the mechanism of hydrophobicity, water tilt angle, contact angle hysteresis, chemical stability, UV durability, and optical According to the principle of wettability of the surface [12,13], the coating composition on the surface of tiles, which consisted of silica and low surface free energy DMDEOS, could effectively prevent the water penetration. Therefore, the treated floor tiles were highly hydrophobic.…”

“…Generally, the surface wettability can be characterized by the water contact angle (WCA). In the last two decades, special wettability with multifunctional surfaces has aroused great interest in fundamental research and industrial applications [7][8][9][10][11][12][13]. A surface with a drop of water below 90 • and above 90 • of WCA is commonly referred to as hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces, respectively.…”

“…Moreover, the spray coating process has not only been used to deposit pristine ZnO thin film, but also metal-doped ZnO which eventually improved the surface smoothness, structure compactness, and electrical conductivity of the thin film [ 166 , 167 ]. Despite the benefits coming from its simple preparation, the spray coating process faces major challenges in facilitating the high yield thin-film production, the battling determination of growth temperature, and the possibility of sulfide oxidation under air atmosphere condition [ 168 ]. “…5,6 Many methods have been reported in the literature for fabricating artificial SHB surfaces by modifying the surface with nanostructures and low-surface-energy materials. 7 Among these methods, spray coating, 811 laser machining, 1214 solution immersion, 1518 and chemical etching 1921 have been primarily used to develop SHB surfaces. However, aforesaid methods are subject to some limitations which include high production cost and low efficiency.…”
