Multipath TCP (MPTCP) is one of the most important extensions to TCP that enables the use of multiple paths in data transmissions for a TCP connection. In MPTCP, the end hosts transmit data across a number of TCP subflows simultaneously on one connection. MPTCP can sufficiently utilize the bandwidth resources to improve the transmission efficiency while providing TCP fairness to other TCP connections. Meanwhile, it also offers resilience due to multipath data transfers. MPTCP attracts tremendous attention from the academic and industry field due to the explosive data growth in recent times and limited network bandwidth for each single available communication interface. The vehicular Internet-of-Things systems, such as cooperative autonomous driving, require reliable high speed data transmission and robustness. MPTCP could be a promising approach to solve these challenges. In this paper, we first conduct a brief survey of existing MPTCP studies and give a brief overview to multipath routing. Then we discuss the significance technical challenges in applying MPTCP for vehicular networks and point out future research directions.

Reduce delay of multipath TCP in IoT networks

Multi-homed devices such as smartphones, tablets and laptops are enabled with multiple heterogeneous interfaces available for transmission. Those interfaces can be utilized for simultaneous transmission of a single TCP flow using Multipath TCP (MPTCP). MPTCP is a protocol that is designed to increase end-to-end throughput and reliability of communications by splitting data through multiple parallel paths. Although delay in MPTCP enhanced significantly in the recent years, high number of data transmissions remains an issue. In this paper, we reduce MPTCP delay by reducing the number of transmissions using Opportunistic Routing (OR) technique. OR is a routing model used to increase the delivery rate and reliability of data transmission in wireless networks by using the broadcasting method. This enables each subflow data to be delivered by multiple relays. We adapted OR on a number of MPTCP protocols namely, traditional MPTCP, Multipath TCP Traffic Splitting Control (MPTCP-TSC) and Redundant MPTCP (ReMP TCP) in an Internet of Things (IoT) environment. The results show that OR-based MPTCP schemes outperform existing schemes. We further compared the OR-based MPTCP protocols in terms of startup delay and energy efficiency. We found that ReMP TCP is better than other schemes in all scenarios.

Aiming at the common load balancing problems in the network, a multi-path load balancing strategy (MPF-MLBS) based on multi-performance factor (MPF) for Software Defined Network (SDN) networks is proposed, which can be divided into two stages: algorithm design and strategy implementation. In the algorithm design stage, the advantages and disadvantages of the existing load balancing algorithms are analyzed, combined with the characteristics of the SDN network architecture, and the bandwidth, delay and link rate of the network link are comprehensively considered. Based on this, multiple performance factors are defined, and a load balancing algorithm based on multiple performance factors (MPF-CMP) is designed and implemented. In the strategy implementation stage, build a multi-path network topology based on the SDN architecture, and use the depth-first traversal algorithm to traverse the global network to obtain the required link information; Subsequently, the MPF-CMP algorithm and OpenFlow group table technology are combined to complete the proportional distribution of network traffic to each available path, thereby achieving multi-path load balancing of the SDN network. The simulation experiment results show that the strategy effectively exerts the SDN controller's overall network monitoring and scheduling functions, can obtain link information in real time and distribute and transmit network traffic according to the situation. The overload of a single path is avoided, the data packet transmission volume of all available paths is effectively increased, the flow transmission efficiency of the entire network is improved, and the multi-path load balancing of the SDN network is realized.
