Impregnation of ionic liquids in mesoporous silica using supercritical carbon dioxide and co-solvent

Abstract: Impregnation of ILs on SBA-15 was successfully prepared in supercritical CO2. It was superior to the sample prepared using impregnation method.

“…72 For the SCFD method, since supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO 2 ) has low surface tension and can dissolve ILs by adding little cosolvent to lower the viscosity of IL, the IL loading and dispersion are improved compared to those prepared by the impregnation method with higher CO 2 capacity. 73 Moreover, Wu et al 74 found that when there is polar organic compounds such as acetone and ethanol, the IL will be dramatically dissolve in scCO 2 , especially adding more than 10 mol% of the compounds in scCO 2 . Yin et al 54 The supported conventional IL adsorbents are summarized in Table 1.…”

“…The impregnation method 29 was applied to the synthesis of the EDA-M-SiO 2 . In a typical experiment, 2 g of EDA was dissolved in 20 g of anhydrous ethanol and stirred at room temperature for 40 min until the EDA completely dissolved.…”

“…Supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO 2 ) was also an eco-friendly medium. It could be gas-like or liquid-like by adjusting the temperature and pressure, so it was widely utilized in many chemical and biological processes. Combining the ILs and scCO 2 as one medium has received much attention nowadays. Brennecke et al used scCO 2 to extract low-volatility organic compounds such as naphthalene from ILs. The recoveries of organic could reach 94–96%. That is because ILs could absorb plenty of CO 2 , but IL solubility in the organic and scCO 2 phase was negligible. …”
