Important calixarene derivatives – their synthesis and applications

Abstract: Since their discovery as by-products in the phenol-formaldehyde condensation to prepare bakelites, the calixarenes have gained much attention for their application as both surfactants and chemoreceptors. The McKervey group has been a leader in the development and synthesis of new and novel calixarenes for use as ion-complexing agents as well as for use in many other applications. Many calixarene derivatives prepared by the McKervey group are being used in both environmental and biomedical monitoring. This revi… Show more

“…Calix[4]arenes are metacyclophanes having a hydrophobic cavity between the lower and upper rim, formed by four phenol units connected with methylene units [ 1 , 2 ]. Due to their numerous possibilities for functionalization on the upper as well as on the lower rim [ 3 ], this class of macromolecules is known for a wide range of applications [ 4 , 5 ]. Calix[4]arenes were found to act as biologically active compounds as they are used as antibacterial and even antimalarial agents or in cancer chemotherapy [ 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 ].…”

“…Calixarenes and its conjugates are among most studied macrocyclic compounds. The compounds are non-toxic, non-immunogenicity, stable and easy to produce [87,88]. The cavity-shaped of calixarenes possess both hydrophobic and hydrophilic regions with upper rim, annulus and lower rim structures has contributes to their rigid conformation thereby act as host molecules.…”
