Importance of the “What,” “When,” and “Where” of Mosquito Collection Events

Abstract: There is increasing need to apply established standards for recording data on mosquito collection events, because of the diversity of potential data providers, and the growth and interoperability of online databases designed to host these collection records. In particular, adequate taxonomic and georeference data are needed for geodatabases such as Mosquitomap (http://www. mosquitomap.org/) that map and compare these collection points with other spatial information in a geographical information system (GIS) se… Show more

“…Otherwise, detailed notes on each locality were documented in relation to positions along the TBS trails, allowing retrospective georeferencing using Google Earth. All coordinates were converted to decimal degrees ( Foley et al 2009 ) and distributions records are freely available in MosquitoMap (mosquitomap.org).…”

“…to identify incorrect georeferences that do not fall on land or appear in the wrong country. The georeferencing and species identification accuracy of mosquito point occurrence data is important [4]. Every effort is made to ensure that the taxonomic data of the species within MosquitoMap is up-to-date using resources such as the Systematic Catalog of Culicidae [14], and the 'check coordinates' option in the program DIVA-GIS 5.3.…”

“…While the methodology of collecting datasets may vary according to the instruments used, the end results, the language and content of the datasets must be concordant in order to facilitate a seamless progression of surveillance results between AFHSC-GEIS partners and program components. Partners at WRAIR-WRBU have published recommendations on mosquito collection data standards, and these are being considered as the standard operating procedure (SOP) for mosquito collections sponsored by AFHSC-GEIS [50]. Similar SOPs will be developed for sand fly and tick collections.…”
