Importance of the Ultrasonography in Diagnosis of Ileal Duplication Cyst

Abstract: Gastrointestinal duplication cysts are rare congenital anomalies that can be seen in anywhere of the gastrointestinal system from the mouth to the anus. These are prenatally diagnosed through antenatal ultrasonography. However, attention must be paid since these formations might be confused with ovarian or mesenteric cysts. Our patient, who had been diagnosed with ovarian cyst on the ultrasonography performed in another center and with mesenteric cyst based on the abdominal MRI carried out at fifth month of li… Show more

“…Gastrointestinal duplication cyst is an additional segment of fetal gut that can occur from the esophagus to the rectum, most commonly at the terminal ileum [14][15][16][17] . Gastrointestinal duplication cysts demonstrate a connection with the gastrointestinal (GI) tract by a common wall of serous and muscle membrane, usually without luminal communication, and may contain ectopic pancreatic tissue [15][16][17] .…”

“…There are several theories explaining the duplication process, and these including the aberrant luminal recanalization theory, the diverticular theory, and the notochordal split theory which consists on neurenteric duplications associated with vertebral anomalies [11]. Duplications may be cystic, tubular, or mixed and can occur in any part of the gastrointestinal tract, but the terminal ileum is more commonly affected.…”
