The effects of sugar mill mud application on the availability of nutrients for plant uptake were investigated. Mill mud generated from conventional sugar mill operations was applied in three different rates and a leafy vegetable, locally called "PuiShak" or Indian spinach (Basellarubra L.) was grown for 60 days as a test crop in a pot culture experiment. Crop yield and essential nutrients like N, P, K and Zn uptake concentration was determined to come up with an inference that higher doses of mill mud application impose better effect on root and shoot uptake of these elements. A little infraction was observed for nitrogen uptake by plants for the maximum dose.

Tebu merupakan salah satu komoditas perkebunan yang memiliki peran yang sangat penting karena sebagai bahan utama membuat gula dan etanol. Akan tetapi, masa tanam yang lama kurang lebih 1 tahun menyebabkan tanaman ini rentan terkena penyakit. Penyakit pada tanaman tebu dapat diidentifikasi secara langsung oleh pakar melalui proses pengamatan pada daun berdasarkan pengetahuan dan pengalaman yang mereka miliki. Pendekatan teknologi berbasis kecerdasan buatan (AI) menjadi salah satu solusi mutakhir untuk mendapatkan informasi penyakit pada tanaman. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini mengusulan teknik klasifikasi otomatis untuk mengklasifikasikan bercak penyakit pada daun tebu. Dataset diunduh dari situs Kaggle terdiri dari 864 citra daun tebu yang terbagi menjadi dua kelas, yaitu Sakit dan Sehat. Untuk dapat menghasilkan model klasifikasi yang akurat dataset dilatih menggunakan algoritma Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) berdasarkan pendekatan model transfer learning dengan arsitektur pre-trained model seperti VGG-16. Semua parameter weight VGG-16 diadopsi dan hanya mengubah lapisan terakhir untuk menyesuaikan output class. Selain itu, untuk mengatasi ketebatasan dataset yang dimiliki, penelitian ini menerapkan teknik augmentasi data. Hasil dari penelitian menunjukkan model klasifikasi mampu mengklasifikasikan penyakit berdasarkan evaluasi menggunakan Confusion matrix dengan nilai parameter masing-masing yaitu 98% akurasi, 100% presisi, 97% recall, dan 98% F1 Score

Sustainable development has been highlighted widely in productive sectors such as the sugar industry with new paradigms and trends such restructuring of sugar mills in biorefineries and development of green chemical from byproducts, considering issues such as technology adoption towards sustainability, circular economy, climate change, value chain, sustainability assessment and decision making. Production of cane sugar is one of Mexico's main agro-industries; it conveys numerous positive socio-economic impacts and presents opportunities for productive diversification and enhanced profitability and competiveness. The sugar industry faces sustainability challenges due to the management of natural resources like soil, water, fossil fuels and agrochemicals, as well as the impacts of its greenhouse gas emissions and socio-economic constraints. However, sustainability of cane and sugar production cannot be assessed due to a lack of methodological frameworks for integrating economic and environmental indicators. We propose an index for Mexico's sugar agro-industry that facilitates the identification of those system components that impact sustainability. This index is based on a reduced number of indicators aggregated through a multi-criteria evaluation using the analytical hierarchy process (AHP). We apply this index to evaluate four sugar production systems in Mexico: producers of raw, refined, muscovado sugar and ethanol. Results show that systems with a high agro-industrial yield present better sustainability performance. This study is relevant because it provides quantitative information for decision makers towards a sustainable sugarcane agro-industry, based on the indicators used to build the sustainability index, to address actions as increase productive diversification by-products based, improve access to credit, irrigation, management practices and raw material quality reducing production costs, eliminate fossil fuel use in factories, make fertilizer application more efficient and reduce the area that is burned for manual harvest.
