Importance of sample size for estimating prevalence: a case example of infectious hematopoietic necrosis viral RNA detection in mixed-stock Fraser River sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka), British Columbia, Canada

Abstract: Proper sample size must be considered when designing infectious-agent prevalence studies for mixed-stock fisheries, because bias and uncertainty complicate interpretation of apparent (test)-prevalence estimates. Sample size varies between stocks, often smaller than expected during wild-salmonid surveys. Our case example of 2010-2016 survey data of Sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) from different stocks of origin in British Columbia, Canada, illustrated the effect of sample size on apparent-prevalence interpr… Show more

“…Addressing the study of pathogens not sector by sector but from a global perspective is the basis of the One Health concept. This approach address a health threat at the human-animalenvironment interface based on collaboration, communication, and coordination across all relevant sectors and disciplines with the ultimate goal of achieving optimal health outcomes for both people and animals (78). Botulism is part of the European list B of Annex I of the zoonoses Directive (79), surveillance and study of botulism, BoNTs, and BoNT-producing clostridia logically fall under the One Health concept.…”

“…This range of analyses makes it applicable to OBS systems with large or small population sizes, and with a broad design prevalence range. In addition, the tool is free and has had usage across several published articles, making it readily accessible to analysts from a range of backgrounds (77)(78)(79).…”

“…The high prevalence obtained in this research can be explained by the fact that the panoramic radiographs belonged to patients who were examined with the purpose of initiating a pedodontic or orthodontic treatment. The differences in prevalence may be due to the genetic and ethnic populational differences [ 7 ], but also due to the different sample sizes, because a small sample increases the uncertainty of the prevalence [ 24 ].…”
