Importance of non-technical skills in anaesthesia education

Abstract: Rising concern about patient safety has resulted in growing interest in non-technical skills (NTS) among anaesthesiologists. Growing evidence suggesting the use of good NTS training in patient safety in simulated as well as real-world environment made them important in medical education. Both technical skills (TS) and NTS are interdependent. Successful task performance depends on effective integration of both TS and NTS for any given situation. Development of tools for assessing the NTS of an anaesthesiologist… Show more

“…Though clinical abilities and technical proficiencies are essential for successful airway management, non-technical skills are equally important. [ 41 ] Human factors involve considering the impact of aspects of the individual, environment, processes, and culture on human performance. [ 42 ] Poor human factors have contributed to 40% of reported cases, as per the 4 th National Audit Project (NAP4) of the Royal College of Anaesthetists.…”

“…Modern anaesthetists are part of a complex, dynamic system involving not only the patient, but the surgeon, other coworkers, an array of equipment and a complex infrastructure 14. Surveys have shown that NTS contribute to 80% of adverse events, such as inadequate monitoring, poor communication, and not double-checking machines or drugs 15. Therefore, NTS evaluation and training of anaesthetists are essential to the safety of high-risk anaesthesia 16.…”
