Importance of head axes in perception of cutaneous patterns drawn on vertical body surfaces

Abstract: The "disembodied eye" phenomenon (Corcoran, 1977), that is, the observation that a cutaneous (tactile) pattern is perceived as right-left reversed or not, depending on whether it is presented on the forehead or the back of the head, was extended by incorporating a top-bottom axis into a model of the frame of reference in cutaneous-pattern perception. In two experiments, 21 and 15 subjects were asked to report the letter perceived when one of four letters (p, q, b, or d) was tactually presented. The sites studi… Show more

“…In these earlier studies, letters or numbers were drawn on the subject's palm (Corcoran, 1977) or single letters or numbers were presented to the fingers or palm (Oldfield & Phillips, 1983;Parsons & Shimojo, 1987;Sekiyama, 1991). The orientation of the stimulated skin site was varied.…”

“…In broad terms, the perception of tactile patterns reflects both bottom-up and top-down processing. A number of ingenious studies have extended this initial observation and demonstrated how altering the position of the stimulated body part in space, the hand, for example, alters the perception of the pattern (Corcoran, 1977;Oldfield & Phillips, 1983;Parsons & Shimojo, 1987;Sekiyama, 1991).…”

“…In view of the fact that the hand has a number of degrees of freedom, the local pattern of sensory information received at a particular site on the hand often has to be interpreted in light of the position of the hand in space. Some studies have shown that the perception of the pattern of local motion on the hand or other skin surfaces depends on the position of the stimulated part in space (Oldfield & Phillips, 1983;Parsons & Shimojo, 1987;Sekiyama, 1991). For example, the letter "b" drawn on the palm facing the observer will generally be perceived as the letter "b," but when the same local pattern is drawn on the palm facing away from the observer, the letter "d" is perceived.…”

“…The other vantage point had an external locus, like a disembodied rye (Concoran, 1977), and was often the vantage point of the experimenter. Although it is not known why a particular vantage point is used in a particular instance and the selection may be readily malleable by instructions, the use of'various vantage points in touch is likely a "process shared by blind and sighted individuals" (Shimojo, Sasaki, Parsons, & Torii, 1989, p. 149) and is not solely visual or, it seems, due to any kind of visual imagery that requires sight (see also Kennedy, 1993Kennedy, , 1997Sekiyama, 1991).…”
