Importance of Gastric Mucosa in Meckel's Diverticulum

Abstract: ing from the rectum. The mother states that her child (probably from 1 to 6 years old, rarely over 12) has suddenly passed a large amount of blood. An analysis of the amount of blood passed and its color is of prime importance. If the stool containing blood was passed in the toilet bowl the mother will have overemphasized the amount of blood passed; even a teaspoonful of blood in the bowl will make the water red enough to frighten the mother. “…Similarly, one of our three cases had gastric mucosa in biopsy specimens. with ectopic gastric mucosa among those with diverticular bleeding has been reported to range from 77.8% to 98.0% [7]. “…Ectopic mucosa is present in ∼50%, of which 60% contain gastric mucosa [10], which increases to 90% of bleeding Meckel's diverticula [11]. Diagnostic accuracy of the Meckel's scan is >90% in the pediatric population [12] but is less accurate in adults (sensitivity 62.5%, positive predictive value 60% [13]), which is in part because complications in adults are less commonly associated with ectopic gastric mucosa [14].…”
