In design and construction of the Roller-Compacted Concrete dams (RCD) controlling of the thermal cracks is a significant matter. In the construction of RCD dams, two types of internal and external concrete are used; Thermal cracks are occurred due to hydration of various cements in this type of dams. Ignorance of this issue can lead to crack formation in the susceptible points of the dams and also propagation of the cracks during an earthquake is a threat to the stability and durability of the dam. In this research, the behavior of the thermal cracks existed in the RCD dam body, is investigated through translational and rotational components of the seismic ground motion. Three-dimensional finite element model of the concrete gravity dam is built in ABAQUS software, and the model was subjected to 7 near-field earthquake records. After validation of the model, the propagation of the thermal crack existed in the dam body is evaluated using fracture mechanics criterion (J-integral criterion). The results of the finite element analysis show that the existence of the thermal cracks in the susceptible points of the dam, leads to propagation of these cracks during an earthquake. Especially, with considering the rotational component of the ground motion which has the significant contribution in the obtained values of the crack propagation criterion; This contribution is related to the intensity and frequency content of the earthquake, which can lead to an increase of the crack propagation energy up to 50 percent in some earthquake records.

The current paper's goal is to investigate how dynamic interaction phenomena and material nonlinearities affect the dynamic behavior of a concrete gravity multi-arch dam in terms of maximum displacements, natural stresses, principal stresses, and Von Mises stresses when subjected to seismic excitation. Utilizing ANSYS APDL software, linear and nonlinear transient analysis using the finite element method was employed to analyze the interaction between the dam and its rock foundation. As a case study for this work, the multi-arch Beni-Bahdel dam was selected, and the seismic excitation used data from a simulated earthquake. The direct method is employed to model the interaction between the multi arch dam and the rock foundation using two approaches; the fixed base approach and the mass foundation approach. Six finite element models were performed using ANSYS code, “linear dam-fixed support”, “nonlinear dam-fixed support”, “linear dam-linear rock foundation” “nonlinear dam-linear rock foundation”, “nonlinear dam-nonlinear rock foundation” and “linear dam-nonlinear rock foundation”. The bilinear kinematic hardening model is employed to represent the nonlinearity of both dam body and rock foundation. The results obtained are compared to understand the effect of both material nonlinearities and interaction phenomenon on the dynamic behavior of the studied dam. In contrast to the nonlinearity of the rock foundation material, it is concluded that the nonlinearity of the concrete dam material has a significant impact on the behavior of the system.

High temperatures generated in the concrete due to the hydration of cement induce thermal tensile stresses. If these stresses are not controlled, they cause cracks in mass concrete structures such as dams. Hence, the thermal and structural stresses needs to be checked against the possibility of cracking to evaluate the safety of the dam. This study deals with formulation and simplified procedure to predict the possibility of crack development in RCC dam. An existing 2-D code has been modified by implementing the crack prediction procedures. The applicability of the modified 2-D code has been shown by analyzing a real RCC dam called Zirdan dam situated in southeast of Iran. The predicted stresses which were obtained through the finite element analysis are examined against the crack development at Gaussian points and it was found that the dam is structurally safe.
