Project-Based Learning Conceptual Framework for Integrating Soft Skills Among Students of Technical Colleges

In most professions, the value of soft skills has been recognized and many companies make decisions on employment and performance assessment based in part on the soft skills of workers. Project-Based Learning (PjBL), in its nature as a pedagogical method, has the capability of harnessing the potential of students in soft skills. The purpose of this study was to develop a PjBL conceptual framework for integrating soft skills among students of technical colleges. The population goal for the study was made up of 372 technical teachers from 22 government technical colleges across the sample area. Considering the heterogeneous complexity of the population from which the survey is extracted, the stratified technique of random sampling was used to choose the 295 participants for the study. Through Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) models the chi-square values, modification indices, and standardized estimates were developed using Analysis Moment of Structures (AMOS). Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was used to check the model's causal relationship by the application of AMOS version 20. The study findings revealed PjBL preparation (planning), application, commitment, and assessment techniques each to have a positive significant impact on soft skill improvement among students of technical colleges. On the other hand, the study found that facilitation in project-based learning has a significant yet negative relation to integrating soft skills among students at the technical colleges. Interestingly, the outcome of this research suggests that PjBL in technical colleges will have a substantial positive impact on the integration of soft skills among the students. Based on the finding of the study, the government should provide adequate facilities for appropriate PjBL activities to enhance the integration of soft skills. Technical teachers should employ the PjBL identified elements in the teaching and learning of at technical colleges for effective incorporation of soft skills among the students. The lifestyle of humans is constantly changing due to globalisation. The demand for suitable and appropriate technological tools applicable in the teaching and learning processes is therefore increasing. The traditional method of chalk and talk in a classroom setting is slowly being replaced with Web 2.0 due to various implications. However, studies on the implications and effectiveness of these tools towards students' assessment of their learning process are lacking, especially in the writing skill. This study aims to provide a report on the use of an online learning platform for assessing students' writing skills. Padlet is used in this study as an online learning platform. The respondents comprise 70 level two teachers from national primary schools in Sarawak. Level two refers to years 4, 5 and 6 in the Malaysian education context. Survey questionnaires, observation checklists and semi-structured interviews were employed and their results were analyzed through frequency and thematic content analysis. The main findings in this research show that the respondents exhibit positive responses towards Padlet. This study also provides some concerns that arise during the implementation of Padlet in the classroom. Limited Internet connection and lack of Information Communication Technology (ICT) skills amongst the students are the two major issues found during the intervention. The implication of this study is relevant to the new pedagogical tool in writing assessment for the current generation of students. Contribution/Originality:This study contributes to the existing literature on teaching and learning strategy and methodology in language writing assessment relevant to the current generation of students. It aims to analyze and explore the feasibility of an online learning platform, namely Padlet, to be used among primary students for writing assessments. vocabulary, grammar, thinking skill, planning, editing, revising and other elements in writing' (Ien, Yunus, & Embi, 2017). Purwanto (2020) added that students can use their writing skills to express their ideas, feelings and thoughts to other people in a relatively permanent form.Ahangari and Behzady (2011) stated that "the ability to write well is also considered as one of the best ways to assess and keep track of ESL students' learning progress" (as quoted in Ien et al., 2017). Along with the need for assessment of English as a foreign language learning with cultural focus, some theories in this field should be reexamined and adapted. Additionally, the 21st-century classroom is also more dynamic thus the assessment that will be used by the English lecturer must be well comprehensive. To do this, the new classroom condition of the 21st-century is used as the basic consideration of learners' needs. Therefore, the re-conceptualizing holistic assessment for culture-based English as a foreign language learning should be based on the integration of the modern assessment such as self-assessment, peer-assessment, authentic assessment, classroom assessment, and the objective assessment either formative and summative assessment. Finally, the implementation of holistic assessment can be done using online assessment or web-based assessment in which lecturer can directly upgrade the existing assessment to be blended model of assessment.
