Importance of Air-Sea Coupling in Simulating Tropical Cyclone Intensity at Landfall

Abstract: An atmosphere-only model system for making seasonal prediction and projecting future intensities of landfalling tropical cyclones (TCs) along the South China coast is upgraded by including ocean and wave models. A total of 642 TCs have been re-simulated using the new system to produce a climatology of TC intensity in the South China Sea. Detailed comparisons of the simulations from the atmosphere-only and the fully coupled systems reveal that the inclusion of the additional ocean and wave models enable differe… Show more

“…Cyclone is also an important metric to evaluate the regional model performances (Lok et al., 2022). In observation, the cyclone number in the north western Pacific region decreased in recent 35 years with a rate of 0.15 per year.…”

“…This poses a challenge when using only atmospheric models such as WRF in coupled modeling frameworks. Various studies, including those by Nelson et al (2014) [31], Zambon et al (2014) [32], Lok et al (2022) [33], Li et al (2022) [34], further emphasize the significance of incorporating air-sea interactions to represent the climatology of weather phenomena accurately.…”

“…Although atmospheric modeling retains its fundamental significance, there exists a pressing necessity to complement it with models that encompass the intricate interplay between the atmosphere and the ocean. This holistic approach is essential for a more accurate representation of the dynamics and outcomes of the tropical storm processes [36][37][38].…”
